The eight-figure headlines get all the attention, but they're not where most of this hobby actually lives. Down where real enthusiasts buy, drive, and trade cars, four segments are doing all the heavy lifting right now — and the numbers behind them are worth paying attention to.

Analog Performance, Before the Screens Took Over

Air-cooled 911s, the Acura NSX, the Dodge Viper, and '90s-2000s BMW M cars keep climbing for the same reason: they're the last generation of performance cars built before driver-assist systems, digital dashboards, and electrification changed what driving actually felt like. Collectors are voting with their wallets. Hagerty's valuation data shows the 964 — long considered the "affordable" air-cooled 911 — up 69% over the past five years, from $88,400 to $149,600 in average condition-3 value. Its more famous 993 sibling isn't cooling off either, up 42% since 2020 to $281,300. Even the water-cooled 996 and 997, once dismissed by purists, are up 40% and 34% respectively over the same stretch.

JDM Icons Move Into Blue-Chip Territory

Japanese performance cars have officially crossed over. At a recent Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este sale, five different Nissan Skyline GT-R R34s changed hands for between $200,000 and $542,000 — numbers that used to be reserved for European exotics. Hagerty's 2026 Bull Market List backs it up at the more attainable end too, naming the 1995–98 Skyline GT-R (average value $82,350) one of eleven cars "appreciation-ready" for the year ahead, alongside the usual JDM roll call of Supras, RX-7s, Evos, and WRXs. A lot of this demand is generational: buyers who grew up idolizing these cars through racing games and motorsport rather than car magazines are now the ones with the checkbooks.

Trucks Aren't a Niche Anymore

Broncos, K5 Blazers, square-body pickups, and early Land Cruisers spent decades as cheap project trucks. Not anymore. First-generation K5 Blazers now average $105,267 on the open market, with clean custom builds regularly clearing $200,000-plus — a segment most auction houses barely used to catalog separately from farm equipment. Vintage 4x4s check every box the current buyer wants: usable, toughened-up mechanicals, an honest look, and a lower barrier to entry than most of the cars on this list.

Muscle Cars: Paperwork Is Worth More Than Paint

The muscle car market didn't cool off — it got more selective. Generic small-block survivors are soft. Documented, numbers-matching cars with real history are on fire. A 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible — one of just five built that year with an automatic gearbox — brought $3.3 million. The actual prototype that launched Don Yenko's Camaro program, riding on its factory 427 L72 V8, sold for $1.815 million. A 1969 Yenko Nova, one of roughly 38 ever produced, brought $852,500. Same era, same bodies, wildly different outcomes — the build sheet and the Marti Report are doing more work than the paint job these days.

You Don't Need Millions to Play

The best part of this market: appreciation isn't confined to the top. Hagerty's 2026 Bull Market List runs from a $16,600 Mazda MX-5 Miata and a $20,000 VW Golf GTI VR6 up through a $55,900 C6 Corvette Z06 and a $36,000 E60 BMW M5 — where 58% of interested buyers are already under 40. Even the $1.55 million Porsche Carrera GT skews younger than you'd expect, with 28% of interest coming from buyers 40 or under. As Hagerty put it: "No matter your budget, it's never been easier to get into an enthusiast car you truly love."

Whichever of these segments you're circling — an air-cooled 911, a clean R34, a first-gen Blazer, or a Mopar with the paperwork to back it up — the deals in these categories aren't happening at Monterey or Scottsdale. They're happening everywhere, all year, one good listing at a time.
