SEMA History Special — The Show's Origins & the Kustom Builders Who Made It Legendary

Long before "custom" meant a lowering kit and a wrap, a handful of obsessive builders working out of garages and back-alley shops were reshaping sheet metal by eye, inventing paint techniques nobody had names for yet, and turning out show cars so strange they ended up in toy aisles, on TV sets, and in sci-fi films. The trade show that now swallows 4.6 million square feet of the Las Vegas Convention Center every fall grew out of exactly that scene — a small group of speed-equipment makers who needed a room of their own.
This round goes deep on both halves of that story: SEMA's own origin, and the builders — Barris, Roth, Starbird, Winfield, Foose — whose work still defines what a "custom" is supposed to look like.
