A Father, A Son, And 1,700 Miles Home In A '61 Chevy C60

Some auctions end when the gavel drops. This one kept going for five more days and 1,700 more miles — a Michigan buyer, his dad, a flight to Florida, and a '61 Chevy C60 that needed to get home.
The truck — a beautifully rebuilt 1961 Chevrolet C60, built by its Florida owner, Dave, and listed out of Jensen Beach — didn't hit its reserve when the live auction closed. On paper, that's where most stories like this one stop. On BIDR, it's often where they actually start: our team worked with Dave and the highest bidder after the auction to get the deal done anyway, brokering the sale and coordinating the handoff between a seller in Florida and a buyer who'd never laid eyes on the truck in person.
That buyer, a Michigan enthusiast, had been eyeing something like this for a while. His wife, for what it's worth, was fully on board. "I guess I'm being proactive about my potential midlife crisis," he joked when he and his dad touched down in West Palm Beach to go get it.
Florida To Michigan, One Tank At A Time

The pair landed in West Palm Beach on Wednesday, September 24th, and headed straight to the shop belonging to BIDR's Norman, who'd helped shepherd the deal through to closing. Paperwork signed, keys in hand, they pointed the C60 north and didn't look back — not even for a sunrise.
- Wed, Sept 24: Fly into West Palm Beach, finish paperwork at Norman's shop, and get the truck rolling north toward Daytona Beach.
- Thu, Sept 25: A sunrise cruise down Daytona Beach, a top-off of oil and coolant, a traffic jam from a semi fire, and a night in Perry, Georgia.
- Fri, Sept 26: Over 400 miles through Atlanta, Chattanooga, Nashville, and Bowling Green, finishing in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
- Sat, Sept 27: Rough Indiana back roads, a transmission fluid check, and a late push into Milwaukee.
- Sun, Sept 28: The final run up Highway 41 — and the C60 pulls into its new home in Michigan.

Along the way, Dad peeled off to grab his own truck waiting at Appleton Airport, leaving his son to roll the last stretch into the driveway solo — which, honestly, feels like the right way for a trip like this to end: just a man, a truck older than his parents, and the last few miles of a very long drive.
When The Reserve Doesn't Hit, The Deal Isn't Dead

This is the part of the story that doesn't always make it into the road-trip photos, but it's the part that matters most to anyone who's ever watched a live auction end without a winner. A reserve not being met isn't the final word — it's a starting point for a conversation. Our team stays in it after the gavel, working both sides to find a number and a plan that gets a truck like this out of a driveway in Jensen Beach and into one in Michigan.
That's the job: not just running the auction, but following through on what happens after. A seller gets his truck sold. A buyer gets his project. And somewhere around Elizabethtown, Kentucky, a father and son get a story they'll be telling at every car show between here and wherever that C60 ends up next.
