1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe — CSX9000 Continuation, Chassis CSX9170

Six cars, one championship, and a shape born entirely out of necessity — that's the entire premise behind the Shelby Daytona Coupe, and it's worth understanding before looking at anything else. By 1963, Carroll Shelby had already proven the Cobra roadster could out-muscle Ferrari on tight American road courses. Europe's high-speed circuits were a different problem. On the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans, the open Cobra topped out around 157 mph while Ferrari's 250 GTO pulled past 186 mph — a gap worth more than ten seconds a lap that no amount of horsepower alone could close. Shelby's answer wasn't a bigger engine. It was aerodynamics.

Pete Brock, working with driver Ken Miles and fabricator John Ohlsen, sketched the coupe's body on the shop floor over a wrecked roadster chassis from the 1963 Le Mans race and hand-formed the aluminum bodywork over wooden bucks in ninety days. The result — a low, kammback-tailed shape that looked nothing like a Cobra — cut drag enough to close the speed gap outright. Only six were ever built. CSX2287, the prototype, still exists today and became the first vehicle inducted into the Historic Vehicle Association's National Historic Vehicle Register in 2014. CSX2299 took the GT class at Le Mans in 1964, running over 196 mph down the Mulsanne in the hands of Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant. CSX2301 clinched the championship at Reims in 1965 and later sold at auction for $7.25 million. In November 1965, CSX2287 returned to competition duty one more time at Bonneville, where Craig Breedlove and a Goodyear test team set 25 USAC/FIA land speed records at over 190 mph. Across 1964 and 1965 the six Daytona Coupes swept GT-class wins at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona, Monza, the Nürburgring, and Reims, and in 1965 the effort delivered the FIA World Manufacturers' GT Championship — making Shelby American the first American manufacturer ever to win a title at the international level.

That history is the entire reason the CSX9000 Continuation Series exists. Built under license with design oversight from Pete Brock himself, the modern Daytona Coupe is a faithful evolution of the 1964 original — the same low, unmistakable profile, updated with a passenger compartment sized for real-world drivers and a powertrain built for daily reliability rather than 1960s endurance-racing durability. Today's example, chassis CSX9170, carries that continuation forward in exceptional, low-mile condition.

Power comes from a Prestige Motorsports 427ci V8 fitted with Borla 8-stack fuel injection, silver ceramic headers, an engine oil cooler, and engraved valve covers — a period-correct induction look with modern fuel delivery underneath it. A Tremec TKX 5-speed manual sends power through an aluminum limited-slip differential to the rear wheels, cooled by a dual-fan aluminum radiator. Dual A-arm suspension with coilovers at all four corners, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, and Shelby GT-spec slotted discs with Shelby-branded dual-piston calipers round out a chassis built to be driven hard, not simply displayed.

The body is hand-laid fiberglass, finished in Guardsman Blue with dual Wimbledon White stripes and a matching half-cove, and protected by a full paint protection film. Halibrand-style pin-drive knock-off wheels — 18x8.5 front, 18x10.5 rear, with Wimbledon White centers — wear Nitto tires. Covered headlights with integrated driving lights, functional brake ductwork, polished mirrors, etched Carroll Shelby signature door pulls, Daytona Coupe fender badges, a dual side-pipe exhaust, a period-correct Le Mans-style fuel filler cap, and a rear spoiler complete a body that reads as track equipment first and styling exercise second — exactly as Brock intended in 1964.

Inside, black leather bucket seats with white stitching carry embroidered Shelby 9000 Edition logos, set against a black Alcantara headliner and dash surface. The three-spoke Daytona Coupe steering wheel frames a period-correct Stewart Warner 160-mph speedometer and 8,000-rpm tachometer, backed by supplementary gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, water temperature, fuel level, and battery charge.
